Back when I was doing a fair bit of teaching on the lesson tee, muggins here would often have some poor bewildered soul turn up looking of for guidance after being to a number of other well know teachers locally.
Not sure why they came to me last, but that’s a story for another time. But I do know that when I had a client, I very rarely lost them to other instructors.
Enough of the self-prophesising.
Onwards.
A lot of these students who had sought golfing pearls of wisdom elsewhere came to me in a mess, a huge mess with their games.
They had literally tied themselves in knots and gone backwards not forwards with their games.
I would ask them what they were trying to do with their swing and sometimes the replies would stun me.
It would be easier to build a rocket, jump in it and fly it to the moon than try and hit a little white ball straight with what these people were trying to do.
Alas, they had fallen for the biggest lie in golf instruction, and what’s that I hear you chirp my little golfing friend? It’s this,
In order to get better, you have to get worse.
Rubbish.
The whole point of taking instruction is to improve, not get worse.
Granted, you may feel things are a little different for a while, or they may even feel weird, but the proof should be in the pudding.
I.e. the ball goes where you want it to or does what you want it to.
If the change that has to be made is necessary and is for the benefit of your game, you should see the changes reflected in the flight or action of the ball.
So the next time you here the word’s “your gonna have to get worse before you get better” let the alarm bells ring like they did at Notre Dame and hightail it out of there, life is too short to play crap golf and no point letting someone make you rubbish on purpose.
More.
