Numbers Really Can Lie

There’s a bloke on Twitter who’s whole account is dedicated, or certainly seems dedicated towards golf stats.

It’s quite an interesting thing if you’re into that sort of thing. He’ll give a breakdown of for example how many times a ten handicap will hit the green from 100 yards, how many times a tour pro will miss from six feet, you get the picture.

And the results are always worse than you think, e.g. you could quite easily expect tour pros to make almost all their putts from five feet, the stats tell a completely different story.

And so it goes on.

Now I have to admit, I’m not a massive fan of certain stats when it comes to golf, but there are particular stats that, should you wish to improve and get your scores down, you really ought to keep an eye on.

Reason being, you can’t really improve what you don’t monitor and track, could be very easy to think that one area of your game is off, when really it is another part of your game.

Take for instance the short game.

You could quite easily be misled into thinking that you have a rubbish short game if every time you miss a green you fail to get up and in, or for a higher handicap player, on the green and down in two putts.

On further inspection you could think the fault lies with your putting, as after chipping or pitching onto the green you fail to hole the putt or get down in two, very easy to be misled. The whole issue may actually extend to the fact that your chips and pitches are just not finishing close enough, giving you more work to do with the putter than need be.

As with anything in life the good old eighty twenty rule applies, you know the one, where it says eighty percent of your success is derived from twenty percent of your efforts, well the same goes for stats in golf.

There are a few stats that are worth keeping an eye on, the rest are for those who have nothing better to do

Anyways, that’s my £0.02 worth on the subject, you can find out more on how keeping certain stats can help your golf game in my free e-book “9 Ways To Lower Your Handicap & Shoot Your Best Round Ever”.
